Capturing Nature’s Essence in Art
Leah Read, an accomplished artist known for her exquisite pastel and encaustic creations, has cultivated a lifelong passion for the world’s beauty and intricacies. Her artistic journey is a testament to dedication, creativity, and an unyielding desire to explore the wonders of the natural world.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Leah’s early years were colored by a unique blend of urban and rural experiences. Her family’s adventurous spirit led them to relocate to Marin County, California, where Leah immersed herself in the tranquility of Point Reyes Station and Inverness. It was here that her love for the outdoors blossomed as she explored the wilderness, embarked on road trips, and even joined her father on bug-hunting expeditions, igniting her fascination with the delicate intricacies of nature.
Her artistic roots trace back to her family. Her grandfather introduced her to the concept of “commercial artists” at a young
age, sparking her interest in the creative world. She pursued her passion for art by obtaining an Associate of Arts Degree in Applied Graphics and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art, focusing on graphic design. However, it was during her professional career that she realized her true calling lay in creating art for herself, free from external constraints.
Leah’s art is deeply rooted in her connection to nature. Whether through the lens of a camera or the strokes of pastels and encaustics, her work is a tribute to the world’s flora and fauna. She explores the intricate textures, colors, and details that often go unnoticed, capturing the essence of her subjects in every piece.
Leah’s studio journey is a story of transformation. She transitioned from the makeshift corners of her home to a dedicated 10’ by 16’ studio in her backyard in 2018. This serene space, flooded with natural light and surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, has become her sanctuary, enhancing her focus and creativity.
In her studio, the creative process is an immersive experience. She dedicates hours, often losing track of time, to bring her visions to life. Music sets the rhythm, and her strokes dance across the surface, be it pastel or encaustic. The studio is her haven of focus, free from distractions, allowing her to delve deep into her artistry.
She is an active member of prestigious art societies, including the Pastel Society of the West Coast, the International Encaustic Artists, and NorCal Wax, keeping her connected to the vibrant contemporary art world. Her works have been featured in exhibitions, such as the “Wax and Wildflowers” joint exhibition, where her painting “Was Here” was among the standout pieces.
Leah’s art is a celebration of texture, color, and emotion. She describes her pieces as “portraits” of the natural world, each stroke an ode to the subject’s beauty and significance. Her works are not merely images but emotional connections that resonate with those who view them.
For Leah Read, art is a journey of exploration, a testament to her unwavering connection with nature, and an invitation to viewers to appreciate the world’s hidden treasures. Her creations are a testament to the power of creativity and a profound appreciation for the wonders that surround us.
